Cleansing as a whole
Cleansing is the most essential and the very first step of our skin care routine. We would usually cleanse our face after a long day of work or being outdoors and right before we head to bed. It might not seem obvious to all of us but our skin sheds dead skin cells and regenerate new ones on a daily basis, this continuous process will create build-ups on the skin surface. Without proper cleansing, these build-ups will continue to linger on the skin surface.
Our skin is known to be the largest organ in our entire body. It is a protective barrier which prevents foreign substances from entering our body and holds a shield against harmful effects such as UV rays from the sun. Every single day, our skin is often exposed to different kinds of stressors from the environment (UV rays, heat, humidity or even dust and pollutants). It is not just from the outdoor environment but even while we are indoors.
So in order to protect us from these harmful pollutants, our skin will adapt itself to the environment and produces “Sebum”- an oily substance which acts as a protective layer to coat, moisturize and protect the skin from external damages.
While it is natural and beneficial for us to have sebum on our skin surface, but having excess sebum and leaving it on our skin for prolonged hours will accumulate dead skin cells causing blockage in our pores. As a result, the clogged pores will lead to unhealthy skin conditions such as acne, blackheads, whiteheads and skin redness. Hence, cleansing is super important for us to maintain a healthy looking skin!
Importance of cleansing and exfoliating
1. Removes impurities and dead skin cells
Facial cleansers are now commonly available in our daily lives that we can use to remove pollutants and impurities from our skin, keeping it clean and healthy. On the other hand, exfoliators such as face scrubs work hand in hand with facial cleansers (usually the second step after cleansing) which helps to scrub off the dead skin cells leaving our skin soft and smooth.
2. Improves absorption of nutrients from skin care products
Our skin will regenerate new active skin cells once all the build ups has been removed from the skin surface. These skin cells will then be able to absorb the rich nutrients from our skin care products more effectively, allowing the nutrients to penetrate more in depth into our skin layers.
3. Improves skin complexion, texture and elasticity
Accumulated dead skin cells creates a rough texture on the surface of our skin which makes our skin complexion look dull and unhealthy. With proper cleansing and exfoliating it can help to restore the balance, brightens up as well as improving our skin elasticity. That way, our skin will look much more youthful and supple!
